El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Explained

Weather can be a tricky business, especially when terms like El Niño and La Niña get thrown around. To help break it all down, we spoke with Nick Olson from PredictWind, the go-to forecasting tool for boaties.
So, what exactly is El Niño? It’s part of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) — a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean that influences weather worldwide. Right now, NIWA reports La Niña is still holding on, which is rare for this time of year — only the second time in 75 years it’s happened in summer! Typically, this means moist easterly winds and increased rainfall for the East Coast of the North Island, but given how dry this summer has been, Mother Nature seems to have her own plan.
Want to know how these shifts affect your boating plans? PredictWind’s advanced forecasting tools can help you navigate changing conditions with confidence. Stay safe, and happy boating!
